ABOUT THE CARBON CLOSET

HAVING A CONSCIOUS CLOSET NO LONGER MEANS COMPROMISING YOUR STYLE!

However, transitioning our wardrobes and buying habits isn't always an easy process that happens overnight. It is often gradual and comes after a series of small, painful realisations and moments of awakening to just how destructive the clothes on our back are.

The vision behind creating The Carbon Closet, is to accompany you on your journey to becoming a more conscious shopper, by making it easier to take ethical steps by providing you with ethical alternatives that are just as affordable, accessible and attractive as those found on the main high street.

Having combed through hundreds of blogs to find the top ethical brands and searched through the best of their collections, The Carbon Closet presents a curated shoppable fashion blog, poised to take ethical fashion into the mainstream.

Each item you see has been selected because it matches one or more of the following conscious credentials:

1) MADE OUT OF LOWER IMPACT MATERIALS: Such as Recycled Cotton, Organic Hemp, Econyl, Lyocell, Bamboo, Linen, Pinatex and Mirum
2) PRODUCED BY SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES: Renewable energy, On demand production, Zero Waste, Water Conservation
3) MADE FROM ANIMAL FREE MATERIALS: Free from animal skin, fur, wool, feathers or other animal derivatives
4) DESIGNED WITH CIRCULARITY IN MIND: Biodegradable materials, Recyclability, Durability, Take back schemes
5) PART OF A PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAM: Brands committed to balancing profit with purpose, sharing a % of profits with charitable causes
6) SOCIAL EQUALITY: Local artisans, Smaller independent brands, Safe and healthy working conditions, Fair wages, Traceability
7) POSITIVE CONSCIOUS CERTIFICATIONS: B Corp certified, PETA approved, Vegan Society stamped, OKEO TEX, Fair Trade, GRS, BCI, GOTS

Whilst there are some brands quite clearly leading the way in sustainable fashion, attempting to employ as many of the conscious credentials we have listed as they can. There are other brands that are only just starting out on their ethical journeys. Some may start by utilizing lower impact fabrics, but do not provide traceability on production. Others may use small batch or on demand production but are still using animal skins. My belief is that just like every positive personal change is a step in the right direction, then so is every positive change for a brand.

And whilst we should absolutely be aware of greenwashing. If a traditionally fast fashion brand releases a line of recycled denim jeans or plastic free Lyocell dresses, If you do buy from them, then only buy from their more sustainable lines. Let brands know this is where consumers want to see them invest more.

It is crucial to recognize that our purchasing decisions hold immense power in shaping industry norms. By demanding transparency, ethical sourcing, and environmentally friendly practices, consumers hold the power to catalyse systemic change!

Embracing sustainable fashion isn't merely a trend; it's a moral imperative for safeguarding our planet and ensuring social justice for all.
