‘Tis the season for sequins and sparkle, and due to today’s consumerist norm of buying a new garment for each seasonal event, our planet will do the opposite of sparkle and shine with every new product used, manufactured and disposed of. The Carbon Closet is not condemning your shine- but quite the opposite. We’re here to show you how to sparkle sustainably this winter season. Discover which brands can bring you recycled radiance, organic opulence and other eco-steps you can take to keep your clothes, and our planet, shining for longer.
How to radiate in recycled-sequins
A powerful ethical alternative is to seek out brands using recycled materials for their sequins and sparkles. Regular sequins and glitter shed microplastics in every wash and consequently, end up in our waterways and environment. And if the garment isn’t disposed of responsibly… well, the environmental impact speaks for itself. By purchasing a garment featuring recycled plastic components, you’re helping to give these plastics a second chance at life, and keep it out of the environment for longer.
Brands in our spotlight
Here is a list of some of our favourite brands and their recycled-plastic party-pieces:
Although newer to the market, and therefore less common, organic sequins, or bio-based sequins are an eco-friendly variant of the typical plastic disks we’re used to. Radiant Matter is leading the way with BioSequins, a plant-based cellulose material that offers glitz without the guilt.
Their biggest launch yet was in collaboration with the sustainability queen herself, Stella McCartney, and resulted in a fitted sequin jumpsuit worn by Cara Delevingne.
Despite not easily accessible to the general public yet, we can’t wait to see the surge in eco-friendly shine, and we encourage you to keep this option in mind when it does!
Preserve Your Pizzazz
We understand that garments need to be washed, and recycled or not, these plastic sequins are going to release micro-particles into the environment. So what can you do to help? Firstly, we recommend placing your glitzy-garment into a machine-washable bag. Not only will this discourage water-plastic pollution, but will also protect your garment during the cycle and help it to look glamorous for longer! Just make sure that the machine-wash bags are not plastic themselves- that would defeat the point!
Secondly, and more effectively, a micro-plastic filter can be attached to your washing machine to assist in containing those pesky plastic particles. PlanetCare not only supply you with the easy-install device, but will also take care of your used filter cartridges!
