Imagine buying a T-shirt that, after years of wear, could eventually break down and return its materials to the natural environment rather than sitting in landfill for decades. It sounds futuristic, but researchers and innovators are already exploring how biodegradable and compostable textiles could change the way we think about fashion waste.
Traditional clothing can be difficult to dispose of responsibly. Garments may contain blends of different fibres, synthetic dyes, plastic-based coatings, elastane, zips and other components that make recycling challenging. As the fashion industry searches for alternatives, biodegradable fibres and bio-based materials are attracting increasing attention.
However, there is an important distinction between something being bio-based, biodegradable and compostable. A material can be made from plants without necessarily being biodegradable, while something described as biodegradable may only break down under specific environmental conditions. This means that a genuinely compostable garment is considerably more complicated than simply making clothes from natural materials.
So, could clothes really become compostable? Potentially—but creating garments that are wearable, durable and capable of safely returning to the environment will require significant innovation.

What Does “Biodegradable” Actually Mean?

Bio-Based Doesn't Automatically Mean Biodegradable

The word biodegradable is often used in sustainability conversations, but it does not simply mean that something will disappear naturally.
A biodegradable material can be broken down by microorganisms into simpler substances such as water, carbon dioxide, biomass and, in some conditions, methane. However, the speed and extent of biodegradation depend heavily on the material and the environment in which it is placed.
This is where bio-based materials can become confusing. A bio-based material is made wholly or partly from biological resources such as plants, but being plant-derived does not automatically make it biodegradable. For example, some bio-based plastics are designed to be durable and may not readily biodegrade in the natural environment.
The European Environment Agency highlights the importance of distinguishing between bio-based, biodegradable and compostable materials, as these terms describe different properties (European Environment Agency, 2020).
For fashion shoppers, the message is simple: seeing the word “plant-based” on a label does not necessarily mean that a garment can safely return to nature.

Which Fibres Could Help Create Biodegradable Fashion?

Natural Fibres Already Have a Head Start

Some natural textile fibres are already capable of biodegrading under suitable conditions. Cotton, linen, hemp and wool, for example, are derived from natural sources and can break down more readily than conventional petroleum-based synthetic fibres.
However, a garment is rarely made from fibre alone.
A cotton T-shirt may contain polyester stitching, elastane for stretch, synthetic dyes, chemical finishes or a printed design. Even if the main fabric is biodegradable, these additional components can prevent the entire garment from breaking down as intended.
This is why researchers and textile innovators are increasingly interested in designing garments for biodegradability from the beginning. Instead of considering disposal at the end of a product's life, designers can consider what will happen to every component before the garment is even manufactured.
Emerging bio-based materials are also expanding the possibilities. Innovations using cellulose, algae, fungi and agricultural by-products are being investigated as alternatives to conventional petroleum-based materials, creating new possibilities for future textiles.

Compostable Doesn't Always Mean Home Compostable

Where a Material Breaks Down Matters

One of the most important distinctions in biodegradable fashion is the difference between industrial composting and home composting.
Industrial composting facilities provide carefully controlled conditions, including specific temperatures, humidity levels and oxygen availability. Materials certified as industrially compostable may therefore require these conditions to break down within the expected timeframe.
Home composting is different. Temperatures and moisture levels can vary considerably depending on the season, location and contents of the compost heap. A material that is certified for industrial composting may therefore not break down effectively in an ordinary garden compost bin.
European standards distinguish between different forms of compostability, and certification is important because it establishes the conditions under which a product is expected to biodegrade. The European Bioplastics Association explains that industrially compostable products are designed to biodegrade under controlled composting conditions rather than necessarily in the natural environment (European Bioplastics, 2025).
For consumers, this means a label saying “compostable” should always be investigated further. Where does it need to be composted? How long does it take? And does the relevant waste infrastructure actually exist?

The Problem With Dyes, Coatings and Trims

A Biodegradable Fabric Isn't Necessarily a Biodegradable Garment

Creating a completely compostable garment is considerably more difficult than creating a compostable fabric.
Clothing is made from many different components. Buttons, zips, thread, labels, elastic, embroidery, prints, waterproof coatings and dyes can all affect what happens at the end of a garment's life.
This creates an important challenge for designers. If a T-shirt is made from a biodegradable fibre but contains synthetic thread and a plastic print, can the whole garment genuinely be considered compostable?
The answer depends on the specific materials and certification requirements. A product should not be assumed to be compostable simply because its primary fabric is biodegradable.
This is where design for circularity becomes particularly important. Designers can potentially create garments with fewer material combinations, biodegradable trims and finishes, and components that can be easily separated at the end of their useful life.
The goal is to think about the entire product lifecycle—from fibre production and manufacturing to use, repair and eventual disposal.

Could Fully Compostable Clothes Become Reality?

Innovation Is Moving Towards More Circular Textiles

The idea of clothing returning safely to the earth is exciting, but fully compostable garments are still a developing area of textile innovation.
For a garment to be genuinely useful, it needs to perform throughout its life. It must withstand washing, movement, friction and repeated wear without breaking down prematurely. At the same time, it needs to become capable of breaking down when it reaches the end of its useful life.
Finding that balance is one of the industry's biggest challenges.
Researchers and material innovators are therefore exploring new fibres, coatings and manufacturing techniques that could allow textiles to remain durable during use but biodegrade under controlled end-of-life conditions. Cellulose-based materials, bio-based polymers and other innovative fibres are all contributing to this wider conversation.
However, biodegradability should not become an excuse for disposable fashion. A compostable T-shirt that is worn twice and thrown away is not necessarily a better choice than a durable garment worn hundreds of times.
The most sustainable garment is often the one that stays in use for the longest time.

What Would Biodegradable Fashion Mean for Consumers?

Looking Beyond the Label

If biodegradable fashion becomes more widely available, consumers will need to look beyond simple marketing claims.
Rather than assuming that “biodegradable”, “compostable” or “plant-based” automatically means sustainable, shoppers can investigate what the claim actually means. Is the garment independently certified? What conditions are required for it to break down? Can all of its components biodegrade? And what happens if the garment enters a normal textile waste stream instead?
These questions are particularly important because there is currently no universal solution for dealing with every type of textile waste.
For now, consumers can support a more carbon-conscious approach by prioritising durable clothing, caring for garments properly, repairing them when possible and keeping them in use for as long as they can. Choosing ethical fashion, responsible materials and brands with transparent sustainability information can also help.
Biodegradable textiles may become an important part of the future, but they are likely to work alongside other solutions—including circular fashion, repair, resale, reuse and textile recycling—rather than replacing them entirely.

A Future Where Fashion Returns to Nature

The possibility of compostable clothing represents an exciting shift in the way we think about fashion. Instead of designing garments solely around their beginning and middle—the materials, manufacturing and wearing stages—designers are increasingly considering what happens at the end.
A genuinely compostable garment would need to be designed as a complete system, with fibres, dyes, finishes, threads and trims working together to meet clearly defined end-of-life requirements.
We may not yet have a universal solution for compostable clothing, but the research is opening an important conversation about what fashion could look like in a truly circular economy. The future may not be about creating clothes that are simply less harmful, but about designing products that can safely become part of another system when their useful life is over.
